When to use it

Three dots: the overflow menu, home of actions that didn't earn a visible button. Horizontal reads as 'more about this row'; the vertical kebab variant is common in Material-influenced apps — pick one orientation per product. Lucide's modern name is ellipsis, Tabler's dots, Phosphor's dots-three, Remix's more, Heroicons' ellipsis-horizontal. Keep the menu it opens short; ten items in an overflow is a design smell.

Reach for the ellipsis to tuck away secondary actions for a specific item — the overflow menu on a card, row, or message. It promises 'more actions for this thing' without naming them, which keeps a busy UI calm. Don't use it as the app's primary navigation; that job belongs to the hamburger. Horizontal dots suit inline rows, vertical dots (the kebab) suit the end of a list item.

  • Reaching for Menu? Reach for the hamburger for app-level or page navigation rather than an item's overflow actions.
  • Reaching for Settings? Reach for the gear when the overflow is specifically configuration rather than a mix of quick actions.
