When to use it

A magnifying glass with a plus means 'see this larger' — image viewers, maps, PDF controls. Heroicons and Phosphor build it from their search glass (magnifying-glass-plus), so it inherits the search lens shape; that's fine as long as the plus is legible at your size. Below 16px the plus can vanish, so give zoom controls room or pair them with explicit + / − buttons.

Reach for zoom-in when the action magnifies the current view — enlarge an image, zoom a map or canvas, increase a PDF's scale. The lens-plus reads as 'get closer to what's already here', which separates it from search: search finds something you don't have on screen yet, zoom magnifies what you do. Pair it with a matching zoom-out control so the gesture is reversible.

  • Reaching for Search? Reach for the plain magnifying glass when the user looks for content, not when they magnify the current view.
  • Reaching for Maximize? Reach for the corner arrows when you mean fullscreen or expand-the-frame, not magnify-the-content.
