When to use it

An arrow descending into a tray or bar: bytes arriving on the user's machine. Use it only when a file actually lands on their device — 'save to our cloud' with a download icon is a small lie users notice. Heroicons names it literally (arrow-down-tray) and Phosphor's download-simple drops the tray's lip; all seven read identically at a glance.

Reach for the arrow-into-a-tray only when a file actually lands on the user's device — export a CSV, save an image, pull down a document. Labeling a 'save to our cloud' action with a download arrow is a small lie users notice. Keep it opposite from upload, and distinct from save, which in most apps means 'persist my changes' rather than 'copy a file to disk'.

  • Reaching for Upload? Reach for the upward arrow when bytes leave the device for a server rather than arriving on it.
  • Reaching for Save? Reach for the floppy when the action persists changes in place rather than downloading a file.
