When to use it

Still a floppy disk in every set that draws it, decades after the hardware died — the skeuomorph is now pure symbol, and users who never touched one read it fine. Tabler is honest about the object (device-floppy), as are Phosphor and Iconoir (floppy-disk). Heroicons alone refuses the floppy: its closest gesture is arrow-down-on-square, an arrow tucking into the document.

Reach for the floppy disk to persist the user's current work — save a draft, commit form changes, keep edits. The skeuomorph is pure symbol now and reads fine even to people who never held a floppy. Keep it distinct from download, which copies a file onto the device: save means 'keep what I've done here', download means 'give me a copy of a file'. Heroicons alone avoids the floppy, using an arrow tucking into a square.

• Reaching for Download? Reach for the tray arrow when a file lands on the device rather than persisting in-place changes.
• Reaching for Bookmark? Reach for the ribbon when the user saves something to find later rather than persisting edits.
