When to use it

The pencil means 'change this thing here', usually inline next to the value it edits. If the action opens a whole form or composer, the pencil-on-square variant (Lucide's square-pen, Heroicons' pencil-square) reads better as 'compose'. Don't use a pencil for settings — configuration is the gear's job. Phosphor's default is pencil-simple; its plain pencil adds an extra detail line.

Reach for the pencil to change a value in place — an inline 'edit this field', 'rename', 'edit profile'. It says 'modify what's here', which is why it should not stand in for the gear's configuration or for composing something new. When the action opens a whole form or composer, a pencil-on-square variant reads better as 'compose'; keep the plain pencil for direct, local edits.

  • Reaching for Settings? Reach for the gear for configuration and preferences, not for editing a specific value.
  • Reaching for Copy? Reach for the copy glyph to duplicate content rather than to change it.
