When to use it

The open-end wrench signals repair and maintenance: fix-it actions, maintenance mode banners, advanced configuration. The gear owns everyday settings, so reserve the wrench for heavier intervention — the distinction gives you two tiers of 'adjust this'. Heroicons also draws a wrench-screwdriver combo for general tooling. Tabler and Feather have no wrench; Tabler's closest is its tool icon.

Reach for the wrench when the action is repair, maintenance, or heavier configuration than everyday preferences — a fix-it button, a maintenance banner, an advanced or developer settings area. It reads as 'intervene with tools', which lets it sit one tier above the gear: the gear opens ordinary settings, the wrench opens the deeper work. Keep that split consistent so users learn which affordance means routine tuning versus real repair.

  • Reaching for Settings? Reach for the gear for everyday app or account preferences rather than repair and maintenance.
  • Reaching for Sliders? Reach for the faders when the user tunes values along a range rather than performing a fix.
